Open Access and Open Data for Zurich (#ezuerich)

My two cents for #ezuerich. I didn’t like the format that much (and didn’t like the rights issue), as I think this needs more work done from the organizers than just a forum where you can jot down your ideas. The work (the curation) that was absolutely missing, is to say what role the city can and wants to play in this. Not start with a wild mix of ideas, but high-level and then go more into detail.

Personally I think Zurich should think on two main axes:

  • ACCESS: Grant access to the net for free/or almost free – take water as an analogy. This can include WLAN for all / (or only for the unemployed, all persons that need to roam like tourists, conference participants etc.). It includes also a very usable and cool website to explain this to everyone: locals and tourists = such a service is also about marketing.
    And it could also include a cheap rent service for the newest computer gear: laptops, ipads, Android phones etc. – We would also need more data about the exact needs.
  • OPEN DATA: First this would start with a question: What data does the city and it’s related institutions have (ex. Zurich Tourism)? If we could make all or most of this data openly available as a webservice, other (commercial, startup) companies could start working with it. Next: Go from open data to open government.

The below video is about OpenData for transit in the US, but there is much more data that could be open in Zurich, Switzerland. One example is Point of Interest Data regarding city and cantonal institutions, as well as Event data.
Once this data would be open and accessible via an API, it would certainly be used in many new, exciting and different ways. – And this data belongs to us anyway, so why not open it up now.

In parallel with improvements to the road and tram infrastructure at the Escher Wyss Platz viaduct, the architects Caruso St John and artist Thomas Demand will build two structures referring to the “Stubborn Nail” situation in China. Transplanted from Chongqing to Zurich, is this planned doppelganger an act of reconstruction or resistance, archaeology or abstraction, documentation or fiction, copy or quotation? Uli Sigg and Adam Caruso will discuss the cultural definition of quotation in the specific context of contemporary China.

Zwei ganz liebe Freunde sind auf der Suche nach einer neuen Wohnung in Zürich.
Sie schreiben:

Falls ihr von einer freiwerdenden Wohnung erfahrt, wären wir für einen Hinweis sehr dankbar. Wir sind zuverlässig und unkompliziert. Da wir aber beide selbständig erwerbend sind (Textildesign, Film & Theaterschaffend) haben wir fast nur eine Chance wenn wir als Nachmieter vorgeschlagen werden.

Oben: Korrekte Anzeige (Google Pin) des Vitus-Ladens.

Beim Aufnehmen von Vitus an der Ankengasse 7 (siehe DokoDare) sind wir auf folgendes gestossen. Die Strasse befindet sich laut Google eine Parallelstrasse weiter? Hat da Google eventuell altes bzw. heute falsches Kartenmaterial verwendet? Wir sind gespannt, wenn da jemand weiterweiss.

Und was soll ich damit?

Weitere Läden im Umfeld (50, 100, 200, 500 Meter), mit der Karte finden usw.

Mit einer ID, kann ich auch einloggen und:

  • Läden im Vorfeld bookmarken „Da will ich unbedingt hin“ (※ Add to Favorites)
  • Einchecken (※ Checked in / ※ Check in), damit meine Freunde und Freundinnen sehen, wo ich gerade bin
  • Kurze Texte schreiben „Wow! Grossartiges Kleid hier, @heidi musst Du Dir anschauen“ (※ Kaykus)
  • Letzeres kann man auch kombinieren mit Fotos hochladen (siehe http://photo.kaywa.com)

Zürcher Stadtplan (Züriplan) fürs Handy

Die Stadt Zürich hat den Züriplan nun auch für Handys optimiert, was wir grundsätzlich toll finden.
Surfen auf der Karte ist aber nicht ganz trivial, da die Navigation auf der Karte selbst zu betätigen ist. Und wenn man in die Karte hineinzoomt und den Pfeil nach unten drückt, erhält man meist ein wenig Karte und viel weissen Hintergrund.
Auch die Suche nach Themen ist noch nicht wirklich ausgereift.

PS: DokoDare wäre hier wohl genau das Richtige.
